Mirror Lake - 2005/03/23 15:11 Congratulations to everybody that fished the Club's first Tournament for 2005. Truly a feat to be proud of for sticking out the rotten weather we had.

The following is what may have lead to my win at Miiror Lake on the 20th of March. I was lucky enough to be able to prefish the Thursday prior to the Tournament. It was an over cast day and the water temp at arrival was 42 at about 10:30 a.m. I started out uplake and tried several areas which included areas and drops close to flats and channel bends. I caught nada. I then proceeded downlake and the first thing I discovered was that the water was a degree or two warmer. I covered a lot of water searching for fish. I was able to hook in extremely sporadic spots a few fish. I also hooked on a variety of baits. Jerkbait, silver buddy and grub. The latter being the one I hooked more fish on than the others. My only problem was that between my prefish day and the Tournament, the weather conditions changed. Bright sunshine and much warmer temps prevailed which to me would have made those fish most likely move up to roam the flats to feed and warm up. On the Tournament day we had rain and much cooler temps. If any fish may have moved up on the flats they would have pulled off not too far away from that. I caught my big fish on a drop from 2-3 feet to 5-6 with rubble and a stumpy spot. That was the first fish of the day and it hit right after I pulled my grub off of a stump. At first I couldn't see the fish and was a little concerned due to the fact that it was pulling like a big fish and I only had 8# test on. My drag was set correctly but that doesn't stop you from worrying about the break off. Once it was in the boat was when I really knew how big the fish was.

Tommy F. saw me catch the fish and put his boat right where I caught the fish and he says "There's a drop off here" Thanks! If there were anymore fish there there wouldn't be now!

My strategy for the day was to play between several areas and hoping to hit it right. It did work as my second area came alive on 2 of those occasions and gave up 3 more fish. I just didn't believe that sitting in one spot all day would produce what it needed to win. It did work for several guys, they must have the patience of JOB. That's not my style.

In this case, prefishing did help me due to the fact that I have no experience on that body of water. I was able to put in a few hours before I had to admit defeat and get my boat back home to replace dead batteries. It was the lure I used and a spot I found that happened to work out for me. The big fish may have just been blind luck but I did let other anglers fish that spot before I came in and grabbed the big'un.

After around 11-11:30 I couldn't get bit. But it was easier to take knowing I tanked Momma and the pressure was sort of off. You can never count on what you have in the livewell as winning weight when you have some of the quality anglers we have in the Club. I may have won the first round but we still have the rest of the season to level the field out.

Hope I have been informative enough!
