Buddy Tournament 06-27-2009
Contributed by John Carey
Tuesday, 30 June 2009

Five Alive ran it's annual buddy tournament at Manasquan reservoir this past Saturday, June 27. We had 40 anglers show up to compete and what a competition it was. The weather was beautiful in the mid 70's, with mixed sunshine and clouds, mild winds and water temperatures around 72 degrees. There were 8, 8 fish limits caught and a total of 127 bass weighed in. While my partner and I caught 31 fish, we were culling 12 inchers for 12.5 inchers. It was a different story for other guys that put some nice bags together. 3rd place went to "Steve and Pete". I didn't get their last names but these guys had 18.45 pounds. Well done! Second place went to the father and son team of Joe Surowiec Sr and Joe Surowiec Jr. with 7 fish weighing 19.41 pounds. 6 anglers had nice fish that tipped the scales over the 4 pound mark but Team Surowiec had a monster weighing 5.87 pounds that added the Lunker of the day prize to their second place finish. Great job guys! First place went to Tom Fariello and Tim Dafick otherwise known as "T&T". Their bag of 8 fish weighed an impressive 20.85 pounds. It was a fun time had by all. Five Alive plans to make this tournament a yearly event this same time each year and we hope we see everyone their next year. On behalf of Five Alive I thank everyone who participated for their support and sportsmanship that made this a great day!

Five Alive BassmastersWell, Five Alive braved torrential rains and wind to have a heck of a Mega bucks on Pompton Day #1 and Manasquan reservoir Day #2. Day 1 was tough but most anglers caught 1 or 2 fish with Tim Dafick and John Carey having the only 5 fish limits. Tim gripped the lead by a small margin with a 9.31 bag over Chris Press with 9.1 pounds, 3 fish bag. Chris had a nice one weighing in at 4.99 pounds, just short of being this years first qualifier for lunker of the year. John Carey secured the 3rd place lead with 8.29 pounds with Ryan Gaynor and Steve Richter trailing less than a pound behind him and Tommy Fariello and Rich Mcrone within 2 pounds of 3rd.

North East 05-16-2009

Five Alive BassmastersFive Alive headed down to The North East on May 16th and we were not disappointed. For most of the day the winds were mild with temperatures in the mid 70's. The water temperature varied from 68 to 72 degrees. 26 fisherman participated and 48 fish were caught with 5 guys catching their limits. Top honors went to Tim Dafick who caught 5 bass weighing 16.07 pounds. Second place went to Rich McCrone who also had 5 fish weighing in at 15.61 pounds. Our third place finisher was our club founder, Dave Burket, with 5 fish weighing 13.15 pounds. I watched Dave putting on a clinic catching, what seemed to be, fish after fish. I could here him yelling "I won" all day. What That means I have no idea but Dave still can catch 'em!! Good to see him fishing with us again. Lunker went to yours truly with a 4.93 pounder. Randy Baran had a 4.94 pound fish which would have taken lunker however his fish was dead and Randy was penalized .25 pounds. Atsa shame. We head to Candlewood next, on June 6 and if it's anything like last year, we are in for a treat of big bronzebacks!!

Good luck all and see you there

Monday, 27 April 2009

Five Alive BassmastersFive Alive hit the Potomac this Saturday, April 25th. The water had warmed to as high as 64 degrees in some areas  Saturday where it was 8 degrees cooler the days before. We knew the warming trend would wake up the bass unfortunately for some, the hot action did not start untill Sunday. Still, there were some descent bags. We had 28 guys fish and 54 fish were caught. First place went to Tim Dafick, one of 5 guys that caught their limit. Tim had 15.87 pounds. Tommy Fariello took second with 5 fish weighing 14.5 pounds and Lunker with a bass weighing 4.67 pounds. Third place went to last year's Angler of the Year , Rich McCrone, with 5 fish at 13.08 pounds. Nice job guys. Next we head to the North East. It should be a good one.

 See ya there!

Buddy Tournament 03-14-2009 Results

Five Alive BassmastersThe first buddy tournament of the season hosted by Five Alive Bassmasters was a tough one! We had 36 boats show up to fish. Keeper bites were hard to come by for most teams with some short fish also being reported. But as usual for Assunpink, a few nice lunkers came to the scales. Any boat that had fish was within one or two bites from cashing a check!

A calm-5 mph wind with cloudy skies and water temps ranging from 46-48, front to back, sums up the conditions.Water clarity was at an Assunpink norm. Many anglers, myself included, were praying for the sun to kick off the afternoon bite which never happened.

Congratulations to all teams who brought fish to the scales and even bigger kudos to Pat and Kyle Harrigan on taking the top prize!!! Great job guys!!!
Lunker of the day went to team Mike keller and Wally Peer with a 5.45 Assunpink beaut! She was a fatty!

Thanks goes out to everyone that showed up...Hope to see ya's at our next Buddy event which will be held at Manasquan Reservoir on June 27th from 7am-3pm. Thats going to be a slugfest!!

Despite Ups and Downs, Kayak Fishing Has Appeal

GRASONVILLE, Md.

Some things are made for each other -- black rum and ginger beer, tuna and tomatoes, shorts and flip-flops -- and some things are not. Into the latter category I've always put kayaks and fishing.

It just seems like the wrong gear for the job. You're cramped, too low to the water to see the holes and humps on the bottom and angling is impossible while piloting the boat. You can't cast and reel or twitch a fly if you have both hands on a double-bladed paddle.

But kayak fishing keeps growing in popularity. People seem to like the simplicity, the good aerobic workout, the silence, the carbon footprint you don't leave behind and the fact that a sea kayak takes you places bigger boats can't go.
